I have been cleaning the 40+ years of grime and dirt off of the engine cases. Some of the dirt is pretty stubborn and the best cleaners to use are not available in this part of California. After trying carb parts cleaner, 409 and other soaps, I ended up soaking the parts in a 3 to 1 of Simple Green. This loosened up most of the dirt and grime. Now I'm using wire brushes to remove the remainder residue after the soakings.
The arm between the front mount and the main engine body was packed with old sandy dirt. I imagine this is from Italy and it took many years for it to fill up. I think I will tape over that opening so it does not fill up with dirt again.
